Help us bring our boy home

Tyler

On April 10, 2024, our son Tyler Thompson traveled to Africa with his friend Marcel to visit Marcel’s family and explore the world. On May 19, we were stunned and heartbroken to see videos of Tyler being beaten and arrested. We have no idea how he ended up in such a volatile situation in the DRC. We are committed to his safe return and are working every possible angle to get him home. We need YOUR help!

About Tyler

Tyler Thompson Jr.—or TJ, as his family calls him—has always been a mama’s boy in the best of ways. He still gives good morning and good night hugs to his mom, always adding, “I love you.” He answers the phone every time his mom or dad calls. And, he excitedly shares stories about the day’s adventures and his dreams for the future.

TJ brings sunlight into every room he enters. He adores his youngest brother, Miles, who is most often found atop Tyler’s shoulders giggling. All TJ’s brothers and sister love him. He is patient and funny and always ready to jump in and play card games or offer advice.

Even as a young adult, TJ still happily joins in family traditions and dons silly Christmas PJs.

TJ has always had a very industrious side. As a young entrepreneur at age 6, with scissors and paper in hand, he started his own “Snowflake Making Company.” And when TJ was in 5th grade, his mom called his school to find out why they weren’t taking money out of his lunch account. His teacher said that TJ knew that she was struggling to make ends meet as a single mother. So, to help his mom, TJ volunteered to clean the tables in the lunchroom so he could get his lunch for free.

TJ is always surrounded by friends. Whether at football practice or at school, TJ’s cheery and enthusiastic disposition always draws people to him, and he is happiest when laughing with the people he loves.

TJ has a soft spot for animals, and he loves his new puppy, Ziggy. He takes in stray neighborhood cats and recently built a shelter for his favorite cat, Rocko.

TJ is a hopeless romantic and goes into every relationship with his whole heart. He gives flowers, cooks dinner, and is open to a chick flick—anything to put a smile on a girlfriend’s face. He once sat through an eight-hour dance competition for his girlfriend and attended every performance. He is so kind and respectful to women.

He loves to golf, camp, go on trips with friends and workout at the gym.

There are not enough words to tell you how much we love and miss our boy.

As long as there is breath, there is hope.

Letter to your local officials

Subject: Immediate Action Needed for the Release of Tyler Thompson from The Democratic Republic of Congo

Dear [Official’s Name],

I am writing to bring to your urgent attention the case of Tyler Thompson, a 21-year-old American citizen from West Jordan, Utah, who has been wrongfully arrested and detained in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tyler is a peaceful and hardworking individual who somehow ended up in The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) while on vacation with a friend's family. To the shock of his parents, Tyler was found in the midst of a failed coup attempt toward the DRC government. His wrongful arrest has caused immense distress to him and his family, who have not yet been able to contact Tyler, but have seen evidence of him being detained and beaten. They are extremely worried about his health given a history with concussions and the fact they have seen video of him being hit in the head multiple times. This could be a potentially life threatening injury given his medical history.

I urge you to use your esteemed office to take immediate action for Tyler’s release. Specifically, I request that you:

  1. Engage directly with the U.S. Embassy in The Democratic Republic of Congo to ensure that Tyler's case is being handled with the utmost urgency.
  2. Communicate with Congolese authorities to advocate for Tyler's immediate release, stressing the importance of fair treatment and justice.
  3. Facilitate any necessary legal or diplomatic support that could expedite Tyler’s safe return to the United States.

The United States has a responsibility to protect its citizens, especially those who are unjustly detained abroad. Your intervention could make a significant difference in securing Tyler’s freedom and ensuring his safe return home.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I am confident that with your support, we can bring Tyler home swiftly and safely.

Sincerely,
